GODEFROY DE LINTOT, MICHEL, esquire, captain in the colonial regular troops, town major of Trois-Rivières, seigneur; baptized 21 Oct. 1637, eldest son of Jean Godefroy* de Lintot and Marie Leneuf; d. 18 May 1709, at Trois-Rivières.
Lintot was the first white child to be born and baptized at Trois-Rivières. On 2 Sept. 1664, he married Perrinne Picoté de Belestre, and four years later became seigneur of Dutort, which had been donated to him by his uncle, Michel Leneuf * Du Hérisson. In the ensuing decade, Godefroy settled a dozen inhabitants on this seigneury.
Lintot was appointed an ensign in 1667 on the recommendation of Alexandre de Prouville* de Tracy and was successively promoted to the ranks of half-pay captain in 1687 and of full captain in 1700. He became town major of Trois-Rivières in 1702, a position which he held until his death. There is no evidence that he served in any of the military engagements of the period. Some writers have credited him with participation in Jacques Testard de Montigny’s 1705 Newfoundland campaign, but the Lintot referred to in the narrative of this expedition was Michel’s son, Rene.
Like his father before him, Michel was burdened with a large family. Of his 12 children, René and six daughters married, three of the latter choosing officers of the colonial regular troops. Michel apparently left little money at his death in 1709, for his widow was compelled to appeal to the state for financial assistance.
