DUBOK (Duboct), “soldat empyrique” (charlatan); fl. 1645–46.
At the end of 1645 Dubok was asked to attend the sick at the mission post at Sillery. He lived there “From 20 November or thereabouts to 22 January.” He had little success, and when his real profession was found out, he was in all likelihood dismissed. The Jesuit Journal observes that he was detested by both Indians and French. Attempts have been made to identify him with the Laurent Dubocq who married the Huron girl Marie-Félix at Quebec in 1662 and who was probably born in 1634, according to the census of 1667, or in 1636 according to Tanguay. If we accept either of these two dates, we must be dealing with two different people, for in 1645 the charlatan Dubok would then have been merely some ten years old.
